UNICEF: Girls Still Bear Brunt of HIV Epidemic

On the start of the Africa AIDS summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, the United Nations children’s agency, UNICEF, says despite progress, adolescent girls continue to bear the brunt of the HIV epidemic. UNICEF says kids and adolescents face significant gaps in testing and access to medication. Anurita Bains, chief of UNICEF’s global response to HIV/AIDS, told VOA’s Carol Van Dam while the total number of infections among girls has decreased, they were still more than twice as likely as boys to contract HIV according to 2022 data.
