UN: Security, Humanitarian Situation Worsen in Sahel
Assistant U.N. Secretary-General for Africa Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee echoed concerns over a “very worrying” security situation in the Sahel that is “exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.” The top U.N. official for Africa briefed the Security Council on Tuesday on the situation in the Sahel, noting that non-state groups carry out attacks against civilians and military targets and engage in confrontations over access to resources. “Resolute advances in the fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime in the Sahel desperately need to be made,” Pobee said.
