Ethnic-based federalism wreaks havoc in Ethiopia
In 1991 when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front EPRDF took power after a successful armed struggle, one of the core principles it instituted was an ethnic-based federalism. Since then, David, Monda Political Science Professor at City University in New York, tells VOA’s Yeheyes Wuhib , ethnic identity became the basis of politics in Ethiopia. The way it is set up according to the professor, federal ethnic nations and nationalities in Ethiopia such as the Amhara’s, Oromo’s or Tigray’s have a defined territorial homeland backed by the constitution to establish their own regions or if they so desire seek independence.
