African bishops have called on Christians on the continent and its islands and all people of goodwill to engage in prayer and fasting for peace. This follows the rising violence and instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where M23 rebels entered Bukavu, the second-largest city in eastern Congo. In a statement, after their first annual ordinary meeting in Accra, Ghana, the bishops condemned the ongoing bloodshed. Mulengwa Zihindura is the president of the Center for Political and Strategic Studies in DRC and a former spokesperson for President Joseph Kabila. He tells VOA’s Douglas Mpuga that prayer is indeed needed.
