Libya's ex-foreign minister Najla Mangoush has fled the country to Turkey after she was sacked over a meeting with Israel's foreign minister, according to a Libyan Foreign Ministry official. Mangoush was earlier suspended when the news broke of her 'unauthorized' meeting with Eli Cohen in Rome last week. On Monday, dozens of Libyans burned tires and blocked a main road in the capital, Tripoli, in protest of the said meeting. It is illegal to normalize ties with Israel under a 1957 law in Libya, which has long been hostile toward the Jewish state. Cohen said the two discussed the importance of preserving the heritage of Libya’s former Jewish community, including renovating synagogues and cemeteries. The talks also touched on possible Israeli assistance for humanitarian issues, agriculture and water management, according to Israel’s Foreign Ministry.
