Host Carol Castiel and Balen Saleh, broadcaster in VOA’s Kurdish Service, talk with Kanan Makiya, Iraqi-American professor and author of the best-selling “Republic of Fear,” about his new novel, “The Rope,” an unflinching account of Iraqi failure following the 2003 US-led invasion. He tells VOA that it was incumbent on the Shia community, Iraq’s new leaders, “to reach out to everybody else and build a consensus and a different kind of state than one that started with settling accounts.”
