VOA's E2A 60th Anniversary: Reflections from Music Time in Africa Host Heather Maxwell
This week, VOA's English to Africa marks its 60th anniversary, during which time it successfully transitioned from analog to digital radio, one of the most important multimedia platforms. Music Time in Africa — a show dedicated to promoting African artists, music genres, and cultural expressions to audiences around the world — is E2A's longest-running show launched in 1965 by legendary broadcaster Leo Sarkisian, a musicologist and producer. Sarkisian hosted the show until the late 2000s. Up Front host, Jackson Mvunganyi, spoke to the show's host, Heather Maxwell. Maxwell, took over as host of the program in 2012, is a ethnomusicologist and musician with a deep passion for African music. She reflects on the changing musical landscape in Africa, the show's rich catalogue and musical archives and her plans to bring the show to a bigger audience.
