Veteran UN Envoy Urges Security Council to End Gaza Conflict

Israeli forces encircled Gaza City on Thursday in their assault on Hamas. Meanwhile, according to Reuters, the death toll rose dramatically as the calls for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza have gotten louder. Ambassador James Jonah, former United Nations diplomat who oversaw the Middle East for 25 years, tells VOA’s James Butty, the only way the Israeli-Palestinian dispute can be resolved is for the UN Security Council to carry out is responsibility under the UN Charter. But he says this will not happen unless the United States and Europe change their position.
