US aid freeze unsettles South Africa’s HIV communities
South Africa has the highest number of HIV-positive people in the world but has also been a success story in terms of treatment and preventing new infections. That's mostly thanks to the money and expertise poured into HIV care here, a sizeable portion of which comes from the US. But now some NGOs that work with HIV-positive communities are in limbo, after Washington put a 90-day freeze on aid. While the State Department later added a waiver for "lifesaving" aid, NGOs that had already shut their doors say it still is not clear if this applies to them, and they are worried this could set back the progress that's been made.
