Opposition parties in Uganda are accusing the government of detaining homeless people and destroying roadside stands as part of a cleanup campaign ahead of this Friday’s Non-Aligned Movement summit. According to the Uganda Monitor, authorities warned the vendors that some of their businesses were illegal and improperly constructed. The government says it is expecting about 4,000 visitors, including over 50 heads of state. Joel Ssenyonyi, the new leader of the opposition in Uganda’s parliament, tells VOA’s James Butty, that whatever the government wants to do for the guests should not be done to the detriment of ordinary tax-paying Ugandans.
