Uganda Ministers Take Swahili Language Lessons
Uganda's state minister for foreign affairs Henry Okello Oryem says colleague ministers are taking Kiswahili language lessons. Uganda approved Kiswahili as an official language in 2022. The government has announced a budget of $ 800 million dollars to promote and teach Kiswahili in Uganda. But critics say the funds allocated for its teaching and promotion is too high and is susceptible to corruption and abuse. Oryem tells VOA's Peter Clottey that the move forms part of the government's effort to foster regional integration.
