Uganda Law Council rejects attorney’s request to defend opposition chief
The Uganda Law Council has rejected the application of former Kenyan Justice Minister Martha Karua for a special certificate to practice law in Uganda. Karua has been appointed to lead a team of lawyers to defend Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused. According to Besigye’s wife, he was kidnapped in Kenya and brought back to Uganda. He and another defendant are charged in a military court with unlawful possession of ammunition and a firearm. Karua tells VOA’s James Butty, the denial will not deter her and the rest of Dr. Besigye’s defense team, and that she will continue to appear in court as an observer
