Flash floods triggered by heavy rains continued to tear up homes across Sudan this week, with the death toll rising to 66 since the start of the rainy season, an official said.

The latest toll revises statements made earlier this week when authorities said that at least 50 people were killed since the rains started in June.

Brig. Gen. Abdul-Jalil Abdul-Rahim, spokesman for Sudan's National Council for Civil Defense, said Tuesday that at least 28 people were reported injured during the same period.

Some 24,000 homes and two dozen government buildings have been badly damaged or completely destroyed, he said.

Othman al-Awad, a resident affected by floods said "All people are left in the street, the houses collapsed and the livestock died. Everything is gone. We are in a deplorable condition and the people are always alert but can't control the damage."

Another person hit by the flooding, Hassan al-Naeem, remarked "This area of Makaylab village hosts around 250 to 300 houses that collapsed and are gone, that I know of, there is also the Nabawya area in the eastern part (of the village) that has all gone; the salons, the rooms and the kitchens are all damaged."
