Russia Expands Its Sphere of Influence in Sahel
Russia has arguably expanded its influence in Africa i more than any other country in recent times. The relations have seen Russia deepen ties in North Africa, expand its reach in the Sahel, and rekindle Cold War ties in southern Africa. Junta leaders in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso say they're leaving ECOWAS and forming their own defense alliance. Nola Haynes, Political Scientist at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service tells VOA’s Carol Van Dam Russia typically relies on mercenaries to expand its reach in Africa.
