Police arrest dozens of Tanzania’s main opposition members
Tanzanian police upended a planned opposition protest Monday and arrested about 50 people, including Chadema party chairman Freeman Mbowe and his deputy Tundu Lissu. Chadema called for a peaceful protest as a memorial to its leaders who it said have disappeared or been killed under suspicious circumstances. But the police said the protest was illegal. John Mrema, Chadema’s director of protocol, communications, and foreign affairs, tells VOA’s James Butty, the party leaders were still in jail as of late Monday.
