M23 rebels seize DRC’s city of Goma
M23 rebels have taken control of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) city of Goma following intense fighting between government forces and rebels over the weekend. In a statement sent to media organizations Sunday night, the M23 called on DRC army personnel to hand in their weapons and military equipment to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in DRC (MONUSCO) for safekeeping. Reporter Al Katanty Sabiti Djaffar in Goma tells VOA’s James Butty, the rebels also ordered all DRC military personnel to assemble at a local stadium this morning.
