Liberia’s Election Agency Confirms Speaker’s Defeat

In Liberia’s October 10 presidential and legislative elections, Speaker of the House of Representatives Bhofal Chambers was defeated by newcomer Anthony Williams. The Speaker challenged his defeat on grounds of electoral irregularities. Thursday, a Hearing Committee of the National Elections Commission denied the former speaker’s motion. Representative-elect Williams tells VOA’s James Butty he sees his victory as a win for the young people of Liberia. He says the first thing he wants to do is reconcile the people of his Pleebo Sodoken District in Maryland County. Later, he also wants to get equipment for the district’s health center.
