Liberia has begun repatriating its citizens from Ghana on buses. The first group of 700 is expected to arrive in Liberia Wednesday. Thousands of Liberians who fled their country’s civil war in the early 1990s have been living at the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana. In 2010, the Ghanaian Refugee Board reached an agreement with the UNHCR to close the camp. In March 2024, authorities began demolishing structures in the camp. Dennis Gwion, president of the Buduburam Camp, tells VOA’s James Butty, the Liberian government arranged for buses to transport the refugees.
