Human Rights Watch Calls For Restraint As Kenya Opposition Protests
A Human Rights Watch official has called on both the Kenyan police and protesters led by opposition leader Raila Odinga to respect the law. The appeal comes as Odinga has called for more protests Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. At the same time, President William Ruto has said his government will not allow anyone who uses extra-judicial and extra-constitutional means to seek power in Kenya. Otsieno Namwaya is the Senior Researcher and East Africa Director for Human Rights Watch. He says each side should respect the right to protest peacefully and without the use of excessive force. Namwaya tells VOA’s James Butty, his group is concerned the Kenyan government has not done a proper investigation of allegations of police use of excessive force against protesters.
