More than 140,000 people have been internally displaced in Somalia over the past four months, primarily due to insecurity and conflict, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) reported on Monday. In April alone, the UNHCR recorded 52,000 new displacements. The UN refugee agency said some 2.94 million Somalis were displaced in 2023. According to the UNHCR, Somalia is hosting 39,025 refugees and asylum-seekers as of April 30, among whom 66 percent are women and children. Abdi Ismail Samatar - a professor at the University of Minnesota and a senator in the Somali parliament tells VOA’s Douglas Mpuga that the Somali government bears some blame.
