Analyst: All Sides Seeking Niger Resolution Must De-Escalate Rhetoric
The military junta that deposed Niger President Mohamed Bazoum last month says they may put Bazoum on trial for “high treason.” The statement comes days after West African regional bloc ECOWAS announced it was readying a “standby force” for Niger. ECOWAS previously issued a deadline for the reinstatement of Bazoum. For more, VOA’s Carol Van Dam spoke to author J Peter Pham, a former special U.S. envoy for the Sahel and a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council, who says all sides need to de-escalate the rhetoric and ECOWAS and the West must find a viable solution.
