African-led Organization Aims to Sustainably Boost Agriculture Production
A 2013 World Bank report says that Africa’s agricultural business could create a $1 trillion food market by 2030 if they can expand access to more capital, electricity, better technology, and irrigated land. According to the International Fund for Agricultural Development, there are an estimated 33 million smallholder farms in Africa and the farmers contribute up to 70 percent of the food supply. VOA’s Abby Sun spoke to Dr. Esther Ibrahim, program officer at AGRA, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, about how the African-led organization aims to sustainably boost agriculture production and improve the livelihoods of farming households. Dr. Ibrahim discusses how AGRA programs have impacted female representation in the agriculture sector. She also explains the Africa Food Trade and Resilience initiative and how AGRA is working to address food shortages through regional food production.
