Gengetone (Kenya) - Music Time in Africa
In this edition, VOA colleague Kwame Asante Ofori joins me; not virtually, but live and in-person for the first time since 2019. He presents two of his favorite current hits “Bloody Samaritan” and “African Beauty” and joins me throughout the show as I dig deep into Kenya’s gengetone music and present a string of awesome pan-African jams including “M’a Ngui Baxx” “Caléçon” and “La Reine du Berbere Gang” from francophone Africa, some amapiano from surprising places, a new release “King Solomon” by Liberia’s hipco star Teddy Ride, and two tunes by old guard musicians Gyedu Blay Ambolley and Bongos Ikwue who keep making relevant music.
