New mothers in the Democratic Republic of Congo can be effectively held hostage if they can not foot their medical debts.
Like 16-year old Annaelle, who, despite birthing twins in Kinshasa three weeks ago, was left at hospital until a businesswoman, Grace Mbongi Umek, who Annaelle had never met, showed up to hand doctors $130 to settle her bill.
Mbongi Umek said she's made it her mission to free new mothers trapped by their maternity debts in a country with no universal health coverage. David Doyle reports.
