Every July 30, South Sudan commemorates the death of politician and revolutionary leader John Garang de Mabior. During the second Sudanese civil war, following the signing of the comprehensive peace agreement on January 9, 2005, Garang served as first vice president of Sudan for only three weeks until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30, 2005. Majak de Agoot is South Sudan’s former deputy minister of defense. He tells VOA’s John Tanza that July 30th is very important to him.
