Businesswoman Frees New Mothers from Debt in Congo

New mothers in the Democratic Republic of Congo can be effectively held hostage if they can not foot their medical debts. Like 16-year old Annaelle, who, despite birthing twins in Kinshasa three weeks ago, was left at hospital until a businesswoman, Grace Mbongi Umek, who Annaelle had never met, showed up to hand doctors $130 to settle her bill. Mbongi Umek said she's made it her mission to free new mothers trapped by their maternity debts in a country with no universal health coverage. David Doyle reports.
