What’s Driving the Rise of South Africa's Amapiano?
With origins in South Africa’s townships, amapiano, a sub-genre of house music, has been rising in popularity globally. The genre, which fuses elements of jazz and soul with traditional piano music, gained global attention during the COVID-19 pandemic as South African DJs played sets online for millions of fans stuck at home. Thabiso Kati, a Johannesburg-based music executive, spoke to VOA’s Jackson Mvunganyi on the genre he says resonates for its rawness and authenticity.
