United States President Joe Biden issued an executive order Thursday expanding the national emergency for Sudan and imposing sanctions on persons destabilizing the northeast African nation, undermining the goal of a democratic transition. Biden said in a statement the situation in Sudan, including the military's seizure of power in October 2021 and the outbreak of inter-service fighting in April 2023, constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.” VOA’s Nabeel Biajo spoke with Cameron Hudson, senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies to understand the significance of the move and its impact on the warring parties of the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
