Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo this week called on African countries to adopt what he calls “Afro democracy” in place of Western “liberal democracy.” Obasanjo said Western-style democracy will never work in Africa because it does not consider the view of the majority. According to the Nigeria Daily Post, Obasanjo made the remarks in a keynote address to a high-level consultation on “Rethinking Western Liberal Democracy for Africa” in the Ogun State capital of Abeokuta. Bayo Onanuga, Special Advisor on Information and Strategy to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, tells VOA James Butty, that former president’s thoughts on democracy are coming a little too late considering that he played a role in bringing about Nigeria’s current system of democracy.
