In Nigeria, environmental rights group, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) said its disappointed with a ruling by the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court Wednesday in favor of Shell Oil and Gas Company. The court said that it was too late to sue Shell’s two subsidiaries over a 2011 offshore oil spill off the coast off the country’s oil -rich Niger Delta region. Another court ruling in 2021 ordered Shell to pay $111.6 million to the Ejama-Ebubu community in Rivers state for polluting their farmlands. MOSOP President Fegalo Nsuke, tells VOA’s James Butty, that while the British courts provided some hope for Shell to be held accountable for polluting the region, the ruling is a setback.
