WASHINGTON — Ghana winger Christian Atsu, who died in the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey last month, will be laid to rest on Friday March 17, his agent Nana Sechere confirmed to VOA.

The late footballer will be buried in his hometown of Dogobome in the Greater Accra region, according to his obituary shared with VOA.

Before being finally laid to rest, Ghanaians, sympathizers and other well-wishers will have the opportunity to pay their respects in-person at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

An invitation sent out by Ghana's president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the state would be assisting the family in Atsu's burial. Pre-burial service will be held between 6:00AM - 9:00 AM local time, with the burial service taking place between 9:00AM-11:00AM this Friday.

The family has requested those attending to wear red and black attire, a tradition in the West African nation for those mourning the dead.

Local media reports that the funeral ceremony will be attended by the president and government officials to ''highlight the impact Atsu had on Ghanaian football and the nation as a whole.''

The body of Atsu was flown to Accra on Sunday Feb. 19 after he was discovered almost two weeks following the Turkish earthquake on Feb. 6 which caused his apartment in Antakya, a city in the southern province of Hatay to collapse. Turkish officials said the accident left more than 40,000 people dead.

The 31-year old was draped in Ghana's national flag, and received at the capital's Kotoko International Airport by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and a large military honor guard.

Atsu had been scheduled to fly out of southern Turkey hours before the quake but Hatayspor's manager said adding that the Ghanaian soccer star had opted to stay with the club after scoring the winning goal in a Feb. 5 Super Lig match.

He joined Hatayspor in September last year after spells with English Premier League clubs Everton, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Atsu, also won 65 caps for Ghana and helped the country reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final, where they lost to Ivory Coast on penalties. He was last selected to play for Ghana in 2019.
