Today’s edition is a true pan-African soundscape of styles: modern Cape Verdean morna (Mayra Andrade), maharganet (Hamo Beka ft. Omar Kamal & Hassan Shakosh), Camer afropop (Kameni), Ugandan dancehall (Eddy Kenzo), Nigerian afrohouse (Niniola), French afrobeats (Dadju ft. Burna Boy), Beninese brass band (Assiki) and alternative music by Raashan Ahmad ft. Tie (Senegal/US). Song of the Week is “Sitimamenya” a collaboration by Malawi’s Madalitso Band and Ukrainian band Tik Tu and we take an excursion to 1981 with a mini vintage-tune medley of traditional music from Sierra Leone, Botswana, and Ethiopia. The showstopper in today’s program is a face-to-face, socially distanced, outdoor interview with the living legend from Mali Oumou Sangaré. Host Heather Maxwell speaks with the world music diva and Grammy Award Winning singer and women’s rights activist about her latest album Acoustic and her impact on women’s rights in Africa and the diaspora (with special mention of French pop star Aya Nakamura) over the last 30 years.
