Today’s playlist features mostly current music but a nice mix of afro mainstream like Fancy Gadam (Ghana), Rema and Korede Bello (Nigeria), Rayvanny & Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania) and Kabza De Small (South Africa) and other stuff you don’t hear on your local music stations like contemporary, classic Mande music by Trio da Kali (Mali/US), the alternative artist Dawit Cherent (Ethiopia), the singer/songwriter from Maria Sigaa (Casamance, Senegal), African reggae by Canadian-based Ivorian artist Dakka Dembele and gorgeous music from Cape Verde by Mayra Andrade. Song of the week is a fun, high-energy dance tune by Queen Sheebah Karungi of Uganda featuring Crysto Panda: Kwame Ofori joins me virtually, as usual, to present that. And Then, last but definitely not least, today’s feature is my interview (virtual) with inanga musician Munyakazi Deo from Rwanda. Inanga is a very special, traditional instrument unique to Rwanda, and Munyakazi has just released his debut album that features that instrument in an innovate and fresh, new way. We talk about the album and then zero in one song in particular about the Rwandan mandatory work holiday, umuganda.
